Book Editor

A visual, canvas-based editor for composing and refining every page of your book.

Overview

The Book Editor is where you finalize your book. Whether you started from the Story Builder or from scratch, the editor gives you full control over text, images, characters, and layout on every page.

The editor uses a canvas with a layer system. Each element — text, images, characters, objects — lives on its own layer and can be positioned, resized, and reordered independently.

Pages and navigation

Pages are shown in a scrollable panel on the left. Click any page to select it for editing. You can reorder pages by dragging them, and add or remove pages from this panel.

Each page contains one or more scenes. A scene is a single visual composition — the combination of a background image, text, characters, and objects that make up what the reader sees.

Text editing

Add text to any page by selecting the text tool. Text elements support:

Font selection from a curated library

Size, color, and alignment controls

Multiple text box styles — transparent, bordered, speech bubbles

Drag positioning and resizing on the canvas

Speech bubbles come in several styles for different tones: standard, thought, yelling, whispering, and more.

Image generation

Generate scene images using AI. Write a prompt describing what you want, and Bitbook generates an illustration in your book's art style. You can regenerate as many times as needed.

For more targeted edits, use the brush tool to paint over a specific area, then describe what should change. This uses inpainting to modify just the selected region while keeping the rest of the image intact.

You can also upload your own images to use as scene backgrounds.

Layers

The editor uses a layer system to composite elements on each page. Layers appear in the right panel and can be reordered to control what appears in front of what.

There are three types of layers:

Character layers

Place a character from your library onto the scene. The character is rendered in the scene's art style and blended into the background. You can reposition and resize the character on the canvas.

Asset layers

Add objects — props, items, environmental elements — to the scene. Assets work the same way as characters: placed, positioned, and blended into the background.

Background

The base image of the scene. Generated from a prompt, uploaded, or produced by the Story Builder. When you add character or asset layers, the background is automatically updated to blend them in.

Selection tools

The lasso tool lets you draw a selection around any element in a scene image. Bitbook refines the selection using AI segmentation and identifies whether the selected region is a character or an object.

From the selection, you can create a new character or asset layer directly, separating the element from the background for independent control.

Page layouts

Pages support two layout modes:

Single panel — one full-page scene

Multi-panel — comic-style layout with multiple scenes per page

You can switch between layouts at any time. Multi-panel layouts are primarily used for comic books and graphic novels.

Saving

Changes are saved automatically as you work. You can also save manually at any time. The editor preserves your full editing history, so you can undo and redo changes.
