Characters

Create custom characters and use them consistently across your books.

Overview

Characters are reusable across all your books. When you create a character, you define their appearance, personality, and background. Bitbook uses this information to render them consistently in every scene where they appear.

You can create characters from the character library on the creation dashboard, or directly during the Story Builder flow.

Creating a character

To create a character, provide:

Name

The character's name as it will appear in stories.

Description

A text description of the character's appearance. Be specific about physical features, clothing, and distinguishing characteristics. This description is used to generate the character in scenes.

Reference images

Upload up to 10 images of the character. These help the AI maintain visual consistency. Use clear, well-lit photos or illustrations with the character's face visible.

Art style

Choose a default art style for the character. This determines how the character is rendered when no book-level style overrides it.

Character previews

After entering a description or uploading reference images, you can generate a preview to see how Bitbook will render the character. Previews help you refine the description before using the character in a book.

You can generate previews from a text description alone, from reference images, or from both.

Using characters in books

Characters appear in books in two ways:

Story Builder

During the Personalize step, select which characters to include. The AI weaves them into the narrative and generates illustrations featuring them.

Book Editor

Add a character layer to any page. The character is rendered in the scene's art style and blended into the background. You can position and resize the character on the canvas.

Character types

Characters are categorized into two types:

Your characters — characters you create and own. These persist in your library and can be used in any book.

Story-generated — characters created by the AI during story generation. These are available within the book where they were generated.

Managing characters

View and manage all your characters from the character library on the creation dashboard. You can edit a character's name, description, reference images, and art style at any time. Deleting a character removes it from your library but does not affect books where it has already been used.
